Beaver Valley

Beaver Valley Power Station Units 1 and 2 are located in Shippingport, Pennsylvania.  The Westinghouse PWRs are licensed to operate until January 29, 2036 and May 27, 2047, respectively.  Both plants are operated by First Energy Nuclear Operating Co.  Pennsylvania Power Co. owns 65% of Unit 1 and 13.7% of Unit 2.  Ohio Edison owns 35% of Unit 1 and 41.9% of Unit 2.  Unit 2 is also owned by Toledo Edison (24.5%) and Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. (19.9%).  All of these companies are wholly owned by First Energy Corp.

The Beaver Valley site currently does not have an ISFSI and First Energy has not yet announced its intentions regarding an ISFSI.  However, the need for an ISFSI is anticipated for Unit 1 in 2015 and for Unit 2 in 2026.  As of the end of 2010, there was 5,850 metric tons of SNF stored at the five nuclear power plant sites in the State of Pennsylvania — Beaver Valley, Limerick, Peach Bottom, Susquehanna and Three Mile Island.
