
Browns Ferry Units 1, 2 and 3 are located in Athens, Alabama, approximately 32 miles west of Huntsville, Alabama. All three General Electric BWRs are operated and owned by Tennessee Valley Authority. Unit 1 is licensed to operated until December 20, 2033. Unit 2 is licensed to operate until June 28, 2034. Unit 3 is licensed to operate until July 2, 2036.

Unit 3 begin using an ISFSI in 2005. Units 1 and 2 began using an ISFSI in 2008. The ISFSI is operated under a general license. As of the end of 2008, 272 SNF assemblies are stored in 4 dry casks. The casks are manufactured by
Holtec – the Hi-Storm cask system and the MPC-68 canister type. As of the end of 2010, there were 2,990 metric tons of SNF in storage at the two nuclear power plant sites located in Alabama — Browns Ferry and
Farley.
