Crystal River Unit 3 is located in Crystal River, Florida approximately 80 miles north of Tampa, Florida. The Babcock & Wilcox PWR is operated by Progress Energy and is owned (91.8%) by Progress Energy Florida, a subsidiary of Progress Energy, Inc. The remainder of the plant is owned by 9 municipal utilities: Seminole Electric Coop. (1.7%); Orlando Utilities Commission (1.6%); Gainesville Regional Utilities (1.4%); City of Ocala, Florida (1.3%); City of Leesburg, Florida (0.8%); Kissimmee Utility Authority (0.7%); Utilities Commission of New Smyrna Beach (0.6%): City of Alachua, Florida (0.1%); and City of Busnell, Florida (less than 0.1%). Unit 3 is licensed to operate until December 3, 2016. Units 1 & 2 and Units 4 & 5 are coal-fired plants located on the same site as Unit 3. Progress Energy is currently seeking a general license ISFSI for Crystal River, which will be needed in 2015. As of the end of 2010, there was 2,810 metric tons of SNF stored at 3 nuclear power plant sites in the State of Florida — Crystal River, St. Lucie and Turkey Point.
