Dresden Units 1, 2 and 3 are located in Morris, Illinois approximately 23 miles southwest of Joliet, Illinois. The General Electric BWRs are operated by Exelon Generation Co., LLC and owned by Exelon Corp. Dresden Unit 1 was shutdown in October 1978; however, significant decommissioning activities will not occur until 2029 and should be complete by 2031. Unit 2 is licensed to operate until December 22, 2029. Unit 3 is licensed to operated until January 12, 2031.
The ISFSI for the Dresden site began accepting SNF from Dresden Units 1 and 2 in 2001 and from Unit 3 in 2003 under a general license. All SNF from Unit 1 has been transferred to the ISFSI with the exception of 108 assemblies (and one fuel rod basket) that are stored in the Unit 3 spent fuel pool. As of June 2011, 3,332 SNF assemblies were stored in 49 dry casks (the photo only show 29). The
casks are manufactured by Holtec — the Hi-Storm cask system and the MPC-68 canister type. As of the end of 2010, there was 8,440 metric tons of SNF in storage at the 7 nuclear power reactor sites located in the State of Illinois — Braidwood, Byron, Clinton, Dresden, La Salle, Quad Cities and Zion.
