Grand Gulf Unit 1 is located in Port Gibson, Mississippi approximately 20 miles southwest of Vicksburg, Mississippi. The General Electric BWR is operated by Entergy Nuclear South. The plant is owned (90%) by System Energy Resources, Inc., which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Entergy Corp., and also owned (10%) by South Mississippi Electric Power Association. The plant is licensed to operate until November 1, 2024.
The ISFSI for Grand Gulf began accepting SNF in 2007 pursuant to a general license. The ISFSI consists of a single concrete pad measuring 61 feet wide by 196 feet long that is located north of the plant but within the plant’s security perimeter. The ISFSI is configured for cask storage in a 4 x 12 array, although only 44 cask will be stored leaving the last row empty for temporary storage during movements. As of the end of 2011, there were 1,020 SNF assemblies stored in 15 dry casks (the photo only shows 4). The casks are manufactured by Holtec — the Hi-storm cask system and the MPC-68 canister type. As of the end of 2008 there was 770 metric tons of SNF in storage at Grand Gulf.
