Edwin I. Hatch Units 1 and 2 are located in Baxley, Georgia approximately 20 miles south of Vidalia, Georgia. The General Electric BWRs are operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Co. Units 1 and 2 are owned by Georgia Power Co. (50.1%), a wholly owned subsidiary of Southern Co., by Oglethorpe Power Corp. (30%), by the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia (17.7%), and by the City of Dalton, Georgia (2.2%). Unit 1 is licensed to operate until August 6, 2034. Unit 2 is licensed to operate until June 13, 2038.
The ISFSI for Hatch began accepting SNF in 2000 pursuant to a general license. As of the end of 2011, there were 3,196 SNF assemblies stored in 47 dry casks (the photo only shows 16). The cask are manufactured by Holtec – initially the Hi-Star cask system was used (3 casks), and more recently the Hi-Storm cask system was used (44 casks), both employing the MPC-68 canister type. As of the end of 2008, there was
2,490 metric tons of SNF stored at the 2 nuclear power plant sites located in the State of Georgia — Hatch and Vogtle.
