Humboldt Bay Unit 3 is located 4 miles southwest of Eureka, California. (Units 1 and 2 are fossil-fueled power plants.) The General Electric BWR is owned by Pacific Gas & Electric Company and was shutdown in 1976. Decommissioning activities have been underway since 1983 and are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015. Additional information regarding the status of Humboldt Bay can be found on the following NRC website: http://www.nrc.gov/info-finder/decommissioning/power-reactor/humboldt-bay-nuclear-power-plant-unit-3.html.
The ISFSI for Humboldt Bay accepted SNF from August to December 2008 pursuant to a site-specific license. A total of 390 SNF assemblies were transferred to 5 dry casks. The casks are manufactured by Holtec — the Hi-Star cask system and the MPC-80 canister system. In addition to SNF, a 6th cask is used to store greater-than-class-c (GTCC) waste generated during the decommissioning activities.
