Limerick Generation Station Units 1 and 2 are located in Limerick, Pennsylvania approximately 21 miles northwest of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The General Electric BWRs are operated by Exelon Generation Co., LLC and owned by Exelon Corp. Unit 1 is licensed to operate until October 26, 2024. Unit 2 is licensed to operate until June 22, 2029.
The ISFSI for Limerick began accepting SNF in July 2008 pursuant to a general license. The ISFSI is designed to hold 94 dry casks. As of the July 2011, there were 854 SNF assemblies stored in 14 dry casks. The casks are manufactured by Transnuclear — the NUHOMS cask system and the 61BT canister type. As of the end of 2010, there was 5,850 metric tons of SNF stored at the 5 nuclear power plant sites in the State of Pennsylvania — Beaver Valley, Limerick, Peach Bottom, Susquehanna and Three Mile Island.
