McGuire

McGuire Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2 are located in Huntersville, North Carolina approximately 17 miles north of Charlotte, North Carolina.  The Westinghouse PWRs are operated by Duke Power and owned by Duke Energy Corp.  Unit 1 is licensed to operate until March 3, 2041.  Unit 2 is licensed to operate until March 3, 2043.

The ISFSI for McGuire began accepting SNF in 2002 pursuant to a general license.  As of the May 2011, there were 992 SNF assemblies stored in 38 dry casks.  The first ten casks used for storage are manufactured by Transnuclear — the TN-32 canister type.  The remaining 28 casks, and those currently being used for storage, are manufactured by NAC International – the UMS-24 canister type.  As of the end of 2010, there was 3,450 metric tons of SNF in storage at the 3 nuclear power plant sites located in North Carolina — Brunswick, McGuire and Shearon Harris.
