Millstone

Millstone Power Station Units 2 and 3 are located in Waterford, Connecticut approximately 3 miles west southwest of New London, Connecticut.  Both units are operated by Dominion Generation.  Unit 2 is a Combustion Engineering PWR, is licensed to operate until July 31, 2035, and is owned by Dominion Resources, Inc.  Unit 3 is a Westinghouse PWR, is licensed to operate until November 25, 2045, and is owned (93.5%) by Dominion Resources, Inc.  The other owners of Unit 3 are Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Co. (4.8%) and Central Vermont Public Service Corp. (1.7%).  Also located on the same site is Unit 1 — a General Electric BWR that was shutdown in November 1995.  Unit 1 is the responsibility of Dominion Nuclear Connecticut, and although some decommissioning activities have been completed the balance of the work will be completed in 2056.

The ISFSI for Millstone began accepting SNF from Unit 2 in the first quarter of 2005 pursuant to a general license.  The ISFSI consists of two concrete pads although only one has been constructed.  As of the end of 2010, 448 SNF assemblies from Unit 2 were stored in 14 dry casks (the aerial photo only shows 10, the cask photo shows 19).  The casks are manufactured by Transnuclear — the NUHOMS cask system and the 32PT canister type.  Unit 3 has not yet needed the use of an ISFSI. In 2007, Dominion Resources decided that the SNF assemblies from Unit 1 would continue to be stored in its spent fuel pool, instead of an ISFSI, until 2048 three years after Unit 3 is shutdown.  As of the end of 2010, there was 1,990 metric tons of SNF stored at the Millstone site.
