Surry

Surry Power Station Units 1 and 2 are located in Surry, Virginia approximately 17 miles northwest of Newport News, Virginia.  The Westinghouse PWRs are operated by Dominion Generation and owned by Dominion Resources, Inc.  Unit 1 is licensed to operate until May 25, 2032.  Unit 2 is licensed to operate until January 29, 2033.

The ISFSI for Surry began accepting SNF in July 1987 pursuant to a site-specific license and in August 2007 pursuant to a general license.  The ISFSI is located outside the plant’s security perimeter, but within it own security fences, approximately 1/2 mile east of the reactor buildings.  The ISFSI consists of three concrete pads.  One pad is approximately 300 feet long by 30 feet wide and it holds 27 casks.  The second pad is approximately 220 feet long by 30 feet wide and it holds 28 casks.  The third pad is approximately 220 feet long by 125 feet wide and it holds 40 storage modules (the upper photo only shows 18) in a 2 by 20 array.   The larger concrete pad is the one currently being used and has the capacity to accept SNF through 2020.

Five different cask manufacturers have been used.  A single Westinghouse MC-10 cask system storing 24 SNF assemblies.  The NAC International NAC-I28 cask system — two casks storing a total of 56 SNF assemblies.  The GNB Castor cask system with the V21 and X33 canister types — 26 casks storing a total of 558 SNF assemblies.  The Transnuclear metal cask with the TN-32 canister type — 26 casks storing a total of 832 SNF assemblies.  The Transnuclear NUHOMS cask system (which is the current system in use, and is shown in the photos to the right) with the 32PTH canister type — through September 2011 there were 15 casks storing a total of 480 SNF assemblies.  All total, as of September 2011, there were 1,950 SNF assemblies stored in 70 casks.  As of the end of 2010, there were 2,400 metric tons of SNF stored at the two nuclear power plant sites located in the State of Virginia — North Anna and Surry.
