Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Unit 1 is located in Middleton, Pennsylvania approximately 10 miles southeast of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The Babcock & Wilcox PWR is operated by Exelon Generation Co., LLC and owned by Exelon Corp. Unit 1 is licensed to operate until April 19, 2034. Unit 2 experienced a severe accident on March 28, 1979, which severely damaged the reactor core and contaminated the plant — it never restarted. SNF (much of it melted) was removed from Unit 2 in April 1990 and shipped to the Idaho National Laboratory where DOE took title and placed it in storage. Unit 2 is owned by GPU Nuclear, a wholly owned subsidiary of First Energy Corp., and it will be decommissioned along with Unit 1 by December 2036. Exelon Generation has not yet made a decision regarding an ISFSI for the SNF at Three Mile Island Unit 1.
