Vogtle Electric Generating Station Units 1 and 2 are located in Waynesboro, Georgia approximately 26 miles southeast of Augusta, Georgia. The Westinghouse PWRs are operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Co. Both units are owned (45.7%) by Georgia Power Co. a wholly owned subsidiary of Southern Co., and owned (30.0%) by Oglethorpe Power Corp., and owned (22.7%) by the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia, and also owned (1.6%) by the City of Dalton, Georgia. Unit 1 is licensed to operate until January 16, 2047. Unit 2 is licensed to operate until February 9, 2049. Two more units received a construction license from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in March 2012, and construction has just begun.
Southern Nuclear Operating Company is currently pursuing a general license ISFSI that will be needed sometime by 2014. As of the end of 2010, there were 2,490 metric tons of SNF stored at the two nuclear power plant sites located in the State of Georgia — Hatch and Vogtle.
